But for all the success she had on screen, she suffered through much personal tragedy off screen. But her highs on screen were matched by devastating lows off screen. Turner suffered through many personal tragedies and failed marriages in her quest to find happiness. She also struggled for a long period with alcoholism and smoking, both of which led to the throat cancer that would take her life.
She was born into a working class family in the town of Wallace, Idaho. Though her parents did not have a lot of money, Lana had fond memories of the music they would play after dinner. Her parents loved music, and the family would sing and dance each night to the records they played. The work was hard, and he did not make much money. To supplement his income, he would play cards.
He was an excellent card player, and often he won money that he used to buy things for his family. When Lana was a teenager, she and her mother moved to Southern California in search of better job opportunities. Lana found her escape from hardships in the cinema. She would save a nickel of her lunch money every day so that she would have 25 cents to go to the movies on Saturday. She loved the beautiful costumes and jewelry actresses like Kay Frances wore, and she found herself wanting to wear the same wonderful clothes worn by her idols on the big screen.
Not long after moving to California, she was approached by W. Wilkenson, a magazine publisher, and asked if she was interested in acting. She was soon introduced to Mervyn Leroy, who cast her in his upcoming movie. Before he cast her, he thought she needed a catchier name. She was spotted by William Wilkerson, then-publisher of The Hollywood Reporter , who asked her if she wanted to be in movies.

He had a lordly manner about him and a terrible breath because of him eating lots of cheese pastries. By then Lana had lots of problems in her life. She also sliced her wrists.
The filming of this picture began only a few days after her suicide attempt. Fortunately her manager sensed what was going on and found her in time. That got her up on her feet again. But Fernando was very jealous. And when Lana met Lex Barker later on at her house he became violent. Lex Barker became her lover and she married him in They seemed a lovely couple together, but after some time Lex was unfaithful to her.
Lana also was pregnant again and lost the child again. She was devastated. One day Cheryl, her daughter, confessed to her that Lex had been raping and molesting her for years. At once Lana told Lex to leave the house. I think she probably left it out to protect Cheryl and not hurting her.
It must have been a very difficult time for her and Cheryl. Lana and Lex divorced in In she met John Steele. They fell in love. But after a while a friend told her that John Steele was in fact Johnny Stompanato , the gangster.
Lana said that he was right. He started to become violent and beat her and threatened to harm her mother and daughter. One night, the 4th of April , Cheryl heard her mother and Johnny arguing again and she thought Johnny was going to kill her mother. She went to the kitchen, took a knife and went to the room where Johnny and Lana were. When she entered the room she thought she saw Johnny starting to beat her mother again, he turned towards her and she stabbed him.
He was dead. The killing was ultimately deemed a justifiable homicide, but naturally it was a very difficult time for Lana and her daughter Cheryl. Cheryl took the blame. So he did in his book, that was released in The relationship between Lana and her daughter was always difficult. Lana was always busy filming and Cheryl was longing for a mother, that would take care of her and would be there for her.
