What happens if an iguana loses its tail

Iguanas are often afflicted with a condition called avascular necrosis, in which the blood vessels supplying an area of the body become obstructed, leading to death of affected tissue. In most cases, this problem occurs in the juvenile iguana kept in conditions of low humidity. Iguanas are wild animals that can potentially be dangerous pets. They can scratch, bite, whip their tails to defend themselves, and can also transmit salmonella to humans and other pets.

In the early stages of fin rot, the edges of the fins will discolor, appearing milky on the edges. Often this change is so subtle that it goes unnoticed until fraying of the fins or tail begins.

As the infection spreads, small pieces of the fins die and begin to fall off, leaving a ragged edge. If an iguana is raised correctly by their owners, and they get their basic needs met, they will be perfectly happy to be handled by people.

They often grow to like having their little heads rubbed when things are quiet and calm. This is often the closest that their owners see true affection from their iguanas. If your iguana is usually a healthy eater, and suddenly starts picking at or ignoring his food, this could be a sign that something is wrong.

Lack of Energy. Healthy iguanas tend to be quite alert, and even feisty. Loss of Balance. Table of Contents. Note that if the reptile defecates in the tub, it must be washed out, disinfected and another Betadine soak set up. Remove the reptile from the tub and flush the wound with straight Betadine. At night, put triple antibiotic ointment on the stump. Repeat for a week or until the wound is healing over. If there is any sign of swelling at the end of the stump or just above it which does not abate after a week, the lizard should be seen by an experienced reptile vet.

During healing, the exposed muscle bundles will fold over the exposed bone. They will continue to dry out, forming a rigid cap protecting the stump. Skin will then start to grow over it. Tails will generally regenerate, especially if the lizard is still small. It rarely grows back the same length or color. In iguanas, the regrowth is generally a dark rubbery black to start, then, as the scales regenerate, they usually come in a dark chocolate brown, with very small scales, sometimes sandy or gritty in texture.

Sometimes they may be green or have smears of green through the brown. The dorsal crest does not regrow. In other lizards, the color may be different, and the final regrowth may be smeary or the patterning run the wrong way.

Once a reptile has been treated, care must be taken to provide a supportive environment to promote rapid, uncomplicated recovery. Temperatures towards the higher end of the reptile's preferred optimum temperature zone should be provided don't drop them as low at night, but do turn off the basking temps at night. Good nutrition and adequate intake must be maintained; nutritional deficiencies, such as hypoproteinemia and hypocalcemia, will delay the healing process, with the latter affecting the healing of broken or weakened bones.

The environment must be kept as clean as possible during recovery to insure the least amount of contamination of the wound sites. When this happens to a new iguana owner, it can be a very scary experience to have their iguana running one way while they are left holding a twitching tail! The best way to avoid this is to remember never to grab for your iguana's tail.

It's a good idea to also keep an eye on your feet when walking around a free roaming ig. Tail loss can also occur if the ig gets its tail stuck in a door or otherwise wedged, or from attacks by other pets such as cats and dogs.

With most tail loss injuries, the ig will recover fairly quickly if proper care is given. Injuries of any kind are stressful to iguanas, so it is important to keep your iguana as stress free as possible during this time. If the break is a clean one, there should be little to no bleeding.

If there is light bleeding, then a little cornstarch can be used to stop the blood flow and help clotting.
