Good evening! I appreciate the information you have shared here….! We have hiked this trail a while ago. But when I look on the Alltrails website, I do see recent comments of people who have hiked the trail.
The top of the trail, being the Haiku stairs is illegal. Hope this helps!! Hi Nikki! Thank you for the great tips, definitely on my bucket list. Do you happen to know anyone who guides this hike? I just never hike alone, specially a new trail. No, we do not know anyone who guides this hike unfortunately. Perhaps you could find others on facebook groups?
Hope this helps! A guy named Jonathan offers a guided tour. This hike was truly spectacular. Clouds gathered and it rained when we were at the top and looking at the stairway.
We found shelter in the bunker there. Our descent was incredibly challenging due to mud. We slipped and slid all over the place, and one of us took a bad fall down the side of the ridge.
Fortunately, he was ok! It would have been a lot safer if we had had chains on our hiking boots. Thank you for your advice, Nikki. I hope you guys had a good view at the top, despite the rain. Glad you guys are okay, it is definitely more challenging after rain! Tried last year but I gave up on part 3 due to knee injury but I am back to Hawaii and want finish it this time.
Also parking in the community park before the hike will likely get you a parking ticket as that lot is for community park users only. It is illegal to access or climb the stairs, but we did not see any signs about permit parking in the neighborhood. In most neighborhoods on Oahu you can park freely.
The area of Haiku Stairs is still illegal and they recently voted to remove the stairs. My son and I did the legal way last November. It was rainy and windy at the top, however worth every second. I wish we could done the illegal way. Along with all the recommendation, I would also recommend wearing rubber grip gloves for the rope areas and defiantly use spikes.
Wow, glad you guys enjoyed the hike! It is definitely an iconic piece of history that is part of Oahu. Thanks for putting your recommendations out there, that will definitely help others! Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. Stairway to heaven legal way: Ultimate detailed guide The Moanalua Valley, the view you have on your hike. This hike feels extremely unique. The parking lot at the entrance. Two forks in the road.
Paved path on the Moanalua valley trail. Look out for these signs! Magical forest on the trail. Ridgeline with views of the Moanalua valley. Notice the steep drop off! The US naval radio station is in sight! Nikki Hi!
I am Nikki and I have picked up and moved several times, to a different country and to different states in America. There is one section of stairs that was mangled in a storm, but the damage is pretty minimal and you can pass it without any trouble. To stay safe, just wear shoes with good grip and remember to keep 3 points of contact at all times. If you want to see this place legally with no chance of fines, you can hike up the Moanalua Valley Trail on the back side of the same mountain.
The Moanalua trail can be muddy after rain, so check the conditions before you go. The general consensus is that the stairs are actually a safer route. The only reason to take the back route is to stay legal and rule out any possible fines.
This trail is a national and state treasure, with amazing scenery and a cool bit of history behind it. I think it should be repaired and preserved for people to enjoy forever. Billie March 21, pm.
Wonderful read! My husband and I are planning on doing this hike. Are there hand-holds on the places that were sheer drop off on both sides?
We will be hiking in later June so probably drier. David March 21, pm. Thanks Billie! Yes the steepest parts have metal railings to hold. The small section damaged by the storm is not steep. Good luck and enjoy! Bryson Fico April 12, pm. Wow, the Haiku Stairs, although strenuous, it looks fun with great views and a sense of accomplishment at the end.
David April 13, am. Also please pack out your trash! Too many litterbugs on the island sadly. Insane hike!! I followed the map on here, it tells you where to turn and I had no concern for getting lost. The mud does make it slick but it was doable with a good pair of hiking boots! I do recommend the gloves though, it makes the ropes in the crack much easier to handle!
Definitely a bucket list hike. Ropes were really fun. We lucked out with beautiful weather and what seemed to be minimal rain on the trail recently, so while there were some muddy patches, we had no issues hiking in our hiking shoes. Obviously we may have felt differently if we had rain or severe mud, but we also agree with the concerns previously mentioned about the spikes contributing to increasingly deep erosion on the trail.
Pick a clear day if possible to go without them and respect the trail. This hike is about hours round trip and is typically very muddy. Bring water, food, and good hiking boots! This trail was a bucket list item since for me — and I am proud to say I finally did it.
It was a tough one for sure — more so on the way back, just because I was exhausted and my sciatica was starting to act up. But I would do it all over again. Fun, scary, thrilling, and beautiful all at once. It was amazing! Great Hike, very muddy. Get proper shoes and a lot of water. Make sure to follow the right path! We took a different route and it was really dangerous. I'm not a hiking pro.
I did this in vans after rain and that was a huge mistake. Bring work gloves for this hike and decent shoes or those spikes. Park outside the community park on the street and go about 3 miles down the Kamananui access road behind the gate.
Then take a left onto Kulana'ahane trail then an immediate right and that's it! Rope sections and deep pits but worth it. It was a giant cloud for us but I still had fun. Hi all! Plan to do this with two friends. Any tips of when to park by, and also if the stairs are even still there? Reading reviews they were gonna be removed in mid September, This hike was challenging, hot, muddy, long, but SO worth it.
Definitely recommend downloading the directions for the hike before starting just so you know which trail to go to once you get past the beginning part. Took our group of 6 just a little over 8 hours total. I recommend getting there early because parking can be limited.
Bring gloves with you. One of the best hike I have done it was amazing We went there thinking we were going on our basic weekend hike and we ended up having every group telling us it was 3 more hours every 3hours.
You can get blown off we had to squat to hold on at some points so. But so worth it be ready to work on small edges it is a dangerous and long hike. Super excited for this one! Get some spikes and once you pass the rocks or no sooner than when you start climbing put them bad boys on. There were plenty of ladies up there wife included. I did have a hiking stick not needed. It was beautiful and there were dangerous parts but mostly tolerable and I felt in control. The spikes worked great in the mud and it was awesome to reach the stairs.
Began: Stairs: Bottom: Easily beatable We took snack breaks. We argued. We got lost even while knowing where we were at. Plus I started my clock several minutes early. Went on this hike in Going again this week. I see a little feud in the comments so l'd like to mention, prior to the first time I hiked this I dmed Mike Karas who is by far an absolute expert with this trail!!
He covers all bases of planning for hiking so you'll never feel unprepared with what you need. It is a long route but I'm excited to be hiking it again!
We just completed this trail this afternoon! It was fantastic! A little tricky in some places but even a rookie like myself made it up and back with no trouble. Be safe out there. Hiked on the morning of October 3rd. Trail was clear, definitely check the forecast we were rained on pretty much all the way to the top. It can be done without spikes but I definitely recommend them. The trail was pretty difficult today. It was extremely muddy and very exhausting.
We highly recommend crampons for this one. We did not make it to the stairs because it was so muddy and the clouds were covering any chance at a nice view. Look at the weather before going and plan ahead as much as you can. We are really hoping that they reopen the stairs in the future since this was our main reason to come to Oahu.
Use Navigator in the AllTrails app and join the other outdoor explorers who have completed this trail. Length If you receive a citation you will be required to appear in court. There is a security guard at the beginning. Do not attempt this hike.
